In the developing dentition, teeth (specifically canines or premolars), can get locked out of the dental arch. If this occurs, these teeth may be candidates for surgical exposure with placement of a bracket and chain. The chain is ligated to the orthodontic wire and the tooth is brought into the dental arch over time by the orthodontist.
