The trigeminal nerve has three major divisions. The third division of this nerve (V3) has 2 peripheral branches that are commonly injured in dentistry. These branches are the lingual nerve, which gives sensation to the tongue, and the inferior alveolar nerve, which gives sensation to the lower lip and chin. Injury to these nerves generally occurs as a result of wisdom tooth removal or dental implant placement. Dr. Proothi has published on this topic, and has undergone advanced training in micro neurosurgical nerve repair in order to treat these conditions.
