PRF
Stony Brook Oral and Facial Surgery

What is PRF?

PRF stands for Platelet Rich Fibrin. PRF is made with your own blood that we spin and separate using a simple blood draw and centrifuge. We use special collection tubes that have no added chemicals or anticoagulants. We spin and separate your blood using specific protocols that give us maximum concentration of cells such as growth factors, stem cells, white blood cells and platelets. This is reintroduced to the site where it slowly releases these cells, activating regenerative qualities at the cellular level. This increases bone and/or tissue regeneration, fights off infection and reduces post operative pain.

HOW LONG DOES A PRF PROCEDURE TAKE?

The blood draw is the same as a regular blood draw at a lab. It only takes a minute or two. Then we spin the blood as per our protocol, so timing may vary. Please ask one of our doctors if you have any questions about your procedure!

IS IT PAINFUL?

There will be a small pinch to draw your blood, that's it! Studies have shown that the utilization of PRF will decrease post op pain and reduce complications.

IS IT SAFE?

Yes! Since 100% of PRF is a product of your blood and there are no additives, there is virtually no risk of disease or severe allergic reactions!

WILL INSURANCE COVER PRF?

Unfortunately, PRF is not typically a covered benefit. However, with more research and more attention being drawn to PRF, a few insurance companies have been covering PRF. We will verify benefits prior to your surgery. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask our staff!

WHAT DO WE THINK?

Instead of using synthetic or products from other species, using PRF is a 100% natural and holistic way to treat a variety of things. Scientific research is rapidly growing in this field and has been shown to be a highly effective medical procedure to aid in bone and tissue regeneration, assist in clotting, reduce infection, and overall produce a more favored outcome. We encourage you to be your own best advocate and do research of your own to see why PRF may be a great option for you.
